Permits for riding a two-wheeler

What permit for a 50cm³ ?

A 50cm³ or moped is a two-wheeler whose displacement does not exceed 4 kW or 50 cm³. Its maximum speed does not exceed 45 km/h. To drive a moped in accordance with the law, you must be at least 14 years old and possess the Certificate of Road Safety or BSR with category AM as appropriate. Of course, a driver who holds a category B driving licence or any other category is authorized to drive a moped of up to 50 cm³.

What permit for a lightweight motorcycle of 125cm³ ?

A lightweight motorcycle has a power output of less than or equal to 11 kW and a displacement of at most 125 cm³. For this type of two-wheeler, the required permit depends on the driver's age, namely: the A licence from 24 years old, the A2 licence from 18 years old, the A1 licence from 16 years old. Otherwise, you must hold a category B driving licence for at least 2 years and have obtained a permit to drive a lightweight motorcycle, which is only valid on French soil and can be obtained after completing a specific 7-hour training course.

What permit for a motorcycle with a displacement greater than 125 cm³ ?

To drive a motorcycle with a displacement of 125 cm³ and less than 600 cm³, whether equipped or not with a sidecar, it is mandatory to be at least 18 years old and hold the A2 licence. If the motorcycle is more powerful (displacement greater than 600 cm³), the user must be at least 24 years old and possess the A licence. This licence can be issued to any person over 24 years old who has held the A2 licence for at least 2 years and has also completed a 7-hour training course.

Our practical advice for riding two-wheelers in Réunion

For riding safely in Réunion, we recommend caution, as some roads are more dangerous than others and it is advisable to be experienced in riding two-wheelers to navigate them. If you feel inexperienced, we advise against renting a two-wheeler in Réunion.

You must also wear gloves, a helmet, and sturdy clothing at all times to protect yourself, as a fall without protection could ruin your trip or worse. Use the free accessories provided in our two-wheeler rental.

When riding, remember that you are not always visible to motorists. Driving styles can vary depending on the region, so stay vigilant.

We also recommend visiting a tourist office in Réunion to obtain all useful local information for your stay. Don't forget to carry a road map to avoid getting lost on the road.

We advise against riding on the road if the weather is threatening. The rains in Réunion can be very impressive, even if brief, and it will be difficult to travel or even impossible.
